Black Indie Author Highlight: K. Powell

Introduction

Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey as an author?

Answer: I am from Brooklyn, New York. I am currently a social worker in the mental health field. Although, I enjoy what I do writing is my passion. My journey as an author began under the enchanting spell of fairy tales and adventure stories, which filled my childhood with a sense of wonder and endless possibilities.

Q: How did you get started in writing, and what led you to pursue a career as an author?

A: I embarked on my writing journey during childhood, initially penning short stories that became increasingly complex as I grew older. In high school, I completed my first full book, an achievement that was met with encouraging feedback from my classmates. This early success was a source of great pride, yet as I entered college, my writing journey was momentarily paused. It wasn't until 2020 that I reconnected with my love for writing. Rediscovering the joy and fulfillment it brought, I decided to pursue a career as an author. This decision was fueled by a deep-seated desire to never look back on my life with regret for not following my passion.

Book-Specific Questions

Q: Let's talk about your latest book. What inspired the story, and what themes does it explore?

A: I currently have two books published of my 3 part series, ‘Show You No Mercy. What inspired this story is the act of revenge. I have always been intrigued by individuals who take revenge on others because in my opinion it doesn’t ever solve anything. It actually

makes the situation worse. The themes in this 3 part series are revenge, betrayal, unresolved trauma, and forgiveness.

Writing Process

Q: What is your typical writing routine or process like?

A: My usual writing ritual involves lighting a candle, playing some instrumental jazz music, and pouring myself a nice glass of wine. This ambiance helps set the perfect mood for creativity and focus.

Character Development

Q: Are any of your characters inspired by people you know or real-life experiences?

A: In my second book, the story delves into the complex relationship between Sage and her biological father, Warren. Sage finds herself unable to forgive him for past wrongs, a plotline inspired by my own challenging relationship with my father. Writing the interactions

between Sage and Warren was particularly tough, as it stirred up my personal feelings and experiences, making the process emotionally taxing yet profoundly meaningful.

Genre Related Questions

Q: What is your favorite genre to write and read?

A: Thriller is my preferred genre both for reading and writing.

Q: Why do you write the genre you write?

A: I'm drawn to writing thrillers because the lengths to which people will go to conceal something or keep a secret fascinates me. It sparks my curiosity, compelling me to ponder why individuals engage in actions they know are wrong. This intrigue is likely what steered me toward a career in social work.

Book Marketing and Promotion

Q: How do you approach marketing and promoting your books?

A: Juggling a 9 to 5 and trying to get my marketing game on can be

super tough, especially when all I want to do is catch some sleep. I do my best to stick to a schedule, but honestly, most of my content creation happens over the weekend when I can finally breathe and think straight

Favorite Moments and Achievements

Q: Can you share a favorite moment or achievement from your writing career so far?

A: The highlight of my writing career was the publication of my first  book, accompanied by a book signing event. Previously, I often embarked on various creative projects but rarely saw them through to completion, either due to loss of interest or giving up too soon.

Publishing my book represented a significant milestone for me, symbolizing perseverance and achievement. Despite the challenges I faced along the way, I didn't give up. That sense of accomplishment means the world to me.

Q: Is there a particular reader response or review that has stood out to you?

A: Yes!

Future Projects

Q: Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or works in progress?

A: I am in the process of writing the third and final installment of my "Show You No Mercy" series. Alongside this project, I have plans for a romance thriller titled "Obscured Desires" and a psychological thriller called "Enigma."

Q: Are there specific genres or themes you'd like to explore in your future writing?

A: In the future, I'm interested in exploring the genres of romance and science fiction. I have a great idea for a science fiction novel, but I'm committed to ensuring it's thoroughly conceived and crafted, so it might take some time before it's written.

Personal Insights

Q: When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?

A: When I'm not writing, I spend my time reading, watching movies, and playing video games. I have a strong passion for films and frequently find myself at the movie theater.

Inspirations and Influences

Q: How do real-life experiences influence the fictional worlds you create?

A: My writing is deeply influenced by my personal experiences, including the challenges I've faced in friendships, family dynamics, and relationships. I draw upon these moments to enrich my books, infusing my scenes with authenticity and realism. This approach

ensures that the emotions and situations I depict resonate as true to life.

Advice for Aspiring Writers

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring writers who are just starting their journey?

A: Ignore the noise and simply pursue what brings you joy. Years down the line, you'll reflect on the moment you chose to pick up that pen and paper with gratitude, content in the knowledge that you followed your own desires instead of conforming to what others

thought you should do.
